Seroquel and Generic Quetiapine 25 mg and 50 mg
Seroquel is a brand name for quetiapine. In the United States, both Seroquel immediate-release and Seroquel XR extended-release products have current prescription labeling, while multiple manufacturers market approved generic quetiapine products.
A product search should distinguish immediate-release quetiapine from extended-release quetiapine before comparing strength, price or availability. A 50 mg tablet exists in both categories, but the formulations are not the same product.
Seroquel vs Quetiapine
Quetiapine is the active ingredient. Seroquel and Seroquel XR are brand products; generic labels usually use the nonproprietary name quetiapine. Brand and generic products can differ in manufacturer, NDC, tablet appearance and package size.
25 mg and 50 mg Immediate-Release Tablets
Current Seroquel immediate-release labeling includes 25 mg and 50 mg film-coated tablets among its strengths. Generic immediate-release quetiapine is also available from multiple manufacturers.
If a refill looks different from a previous fill, the strength, release type, manufacturer and NDC are more useful identifiers than color or shape alone.
Seroquel XR and Extended-Release Quetiapine
Seroquel XR is a separate extended-release formulation. Current U.S. labeling lists 50 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg, 300 mg and 400 mg strengths. Current generic extended-release quetiapine products also exist under approved ANDAs.
The XR designation is important product information. Current Seroquel XR labeling states that the extended-release tablets should be swallowed whole and not split, chewed or crushed. That product-label distinction is one reason not to substitute an immediate-release and XR product based only on matching milligrams.
Prescription Status and Current Brand Status
Current DailyMed records in 2026 show prescription labeling for both Seroquel immediate-release tablets and Seroquel XR. Current 2026 DailyMed labels list H2-Pharma as the packager for both brand products.
Availability and Price Context
Brand and generic quetiapine can have different cash prices and insurance treatment. Immediate-release and extended-release products can also differ materially in price. Any useful comparison should match the active ingredient, strength, release type, quantity and insurance status.
