Sildenafil and Generic Viagra Guide

Sildenafil is the active ingredient best known from Viagra, the original U.S. brand for erectile dysfunction. Today, multiple FDA-approved generic sildenafil tablets are available in the United States, so a prescription may be filled with Viagra or with an approved generic from manufacturers such as Cipla, Ajanta, Teva, Camber and others. For somebody comparing pharmacy options, the useful questions are not only “brand or generic?” but also strength, dosage form, manufacturer, prescription status, price basis and current availability.

This page focuses on sildenafil products labeled for erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil is also used in separate products for pulmonary arterial hypertension, and those products can have different strengths and labels. A 20 mg PAH sildenafil tablet should not be treated as the same ED product as a 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg ED tablet merely because the active ingredient is sildenafil.

What Sildenafil Is

Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. In U.S. erectile-dysfunction products, the standard Viagra-reference oral tablet strengths are 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. Viagra contains sildenafil citrate equivalent to those sildenafil strengths, and FDA-approved generic products use the same active ingredient in the same dosage form and route for the corresponding reference product.

The active ingredient and the product identity are related but not identical. “Sildenafil 100 mg” describes an ingredient and strength. “Viagra 100 mg” describes a specific brand product. “Ajanta sildenafil 100 mg” or “Cipla sildenafil 100 mg” identifies a generic product by manufacturer or labeler. These products can belong to the same FDA-equivalent product family while differing in tablet appearance, inactive ingredients, packaging, NDC and price.

Viagra vs Generic Sildenafil

Viagra is the brand; sildenafil is the active ingredient. FDA-approved generic medicines must match the reference product in active ingredient, strength, dosage form and route of administration and must meet FDA standards for bioequivalence, quality and manufacturing. FDA also explains that approved generics can differ in characteristics such as color, shape, markings, packaging and some inactive ingredients.

That means a legitimate U.S. generic sildenafil tablet does not need to look like the blue diamond-shaped Viagra tablet. The stronger product check is whether the generic is an approved product with the correct strength, manufacturer or labeler, NDC and prescription label.

For a focused comparison of brand and generic identity, see Viagra vs generic sildenafil.

Sildenafil 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg

Current Viagra labeling and multiple current generic labels list 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg tablets for erectile dysfunction. These are product strengths, not a recommendation that any particular person use one of them.

  • 25 mg: an approved tablet strength found in Viagra and multiple generic product families.
  • 50 mg: another standard ED tablet strength, widely represented among U.S. generics.
  • 100 mg: the highest strength in the standard Viagra-reference tablet family and a frequently searched strength.

If the prescription specifies 100 mg, the dedicated sildenafil 100 mg guide covers current generic manufacturers, product identification and price/availability questions in more detail.

Current U.S. Generic Sildenafil Products

The U.S. market includes multiple approved generic sildenafil products. Current DailyMed records show ED sildenafil tablets from manufacturers and labelers including Camber Pharmaceuticals, Cipla USA, Ajanta Pharma USA and Teva Pharmaceuticals USA. These product lines use the familiar 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg strengths.

Manufacturer choice can matter for availability and product identification even when products are therapeutically equivalent. A pharmacy may have one manufacturer in stock and not another; wholesalers can change supply; insurance arrangements can affect the product dispensed; and a patient may want to identify the manufacturer used on a previous refill. The manufacturer and NDC are therefore useful parts of a pharmacy availability request.

Paulsen’s manufacturer-reference layer includes more detail on Cipla sildenafil products and Ajanta sildenafil and Kamagra products. A separate page also explains the less clearly documented international product Nizagara 100 mg.

Prescription Status

Viagra and U.S. generic sildenafil tablets for erectile dysfunction are prescription medicines. The fact that some older web pages or international sellers use terms such as “online pills” or place sildenafil under an “over-the-counter” category does not change U.S. prescription status.

When comparing pharmacy options, expect a licensed U.S. pharmacy to need a valid prescription for the specific sildenafil product and strength being dispensed. A website offering sildenafil without the normal prescription process should not be treated as equivalent to a licensed pharmacy filling an FDA-approved prescription product.

Price: Brand Viagra vs Generic Sildenafil

Brand and generic pricing can differ substantially, but there is no single fixed national price that applies to every pharmacy or patient. The final cost can depend on brand versus generic, strength, quantity, manufacturer, pharmacy cash price, insurance coverage, deductible, formulary rules and discount arrangements.

For a meaningful comparison, keep the product constant. Compare the same strength and quantity at each pharmacy, and distinguish cash price from an insurance-adjusted price. If a quoted “Viagra price” is actually for generic sildenafil, that should be made explicit. Likewise, a price for four tablets should not be compared directly with a price for 30 tablets without considering quantity.

Important Safety Information

Sildenafil is contraindicated with organic nitrates or nitrites and with guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat because these combinations can cause an unsafe drop in blood pressure. Current labeling also advises against combining sildenafil with another PDE5 inhibitor.

Seek emergency medical care for an erection lasting more than 4 hours. Sudden loss of vision or a sudden decrease or loss of hearing requires prompt medical attention. Other medicines and relevant cardiovascular conditions should be reviewed with the prescriber or pharmacist before the prescription is filled.

Compare licensed pharmacy options: check current pricing and availability using the exact prescribed product, strength and quantity.

Availability and Where a Prescription Can Be Filled

Sildenafil is represented by multiple approved U.S. generic manufacturers, but local availability is still dynamic. A pharmacy can have generic sildenafil in stock while not carrying brand Viagra, or it may stock one manufacturer and order another through a wholesaler. Availability can also vary by strength and package size.

When contacting a pharmacy, useful questions include:

  • Do you currently have sildenafil in the prescribed strength?
  • Is the quote for brand Viagra or generic sildenafil?
  • Which manufacturer or NDC is currently available?
  • What quantity does the quoted price cover?
  • Is the price a cash price or based on insurance?
  • If the product is not in stock, can the pharmacy obtain the prescribed product through its normal wholesaler?

For current Paulsen’s Pharmacy sildenafil availability, contact the pharmacy directly; inventory can change. Other licensed pharmacies should likewise confirm current stock before a prescription is transferred.

ED Sildenafil vs PAH Sildenafil

Sildenafil is also marketed in products for pulmonary arterial hypertension. Current PAH sildenafil labels include 20 mg tablets, and the reference brand Revatio belongs to that indication family. Those products are not simply another strength of the Viagra-reference ED line.

This distinction matters because a search for “sildenafil 20 mg” may point to a PAH product, while a search for “generic Viagra” normally refers to 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg ED sildenafil tablets. Product indication, strength, NDC and label should be checked before comparing price or availability.

How to Identify a Legitimate U.S. Sildenafil Product

A legitimate U.S. product should be traceable through its prescription label and regulatory record. Useful identifiers include the generic or brand name, strength, manufacturer or labeler, NDC, dosage form and package quantity. FDA’s Orange Book can be used to identify approved drug products and therapeutic-equivalence evaluations, while DailyMed provides current labeling for many marketed products.

Tablet appearance can help confirm a known product, but it should not be the only check. Approved generic tablets may differ from Viagra and from one another in color, shape, imprint and inactive ingredients. A pharmacy label that names the manufacturer and NDC is more reliable than a photo comparison alone.

Practical Questions Before Comparing Pharmacy Options

Pharmacy comparison works best when the exact prescription product is clear. Before requesting prices, note whether the prescription is for sildenafil or brand Viagra, the strength, quantity and whether a specific manufacturer is required. If the prescription allows generic substitution, ask whether the quoted product is an FDA-approved generic and which manufacturer will be dispensed.

Also ask whether the quoted price assumes insurance, a discount program or cash payment. A low advertised number may apply only to a limited quantity or specific payment method. The final pharmacy choice should be based on the same product and quantity across every quote.

Sildenafil or Tadalafil?

Sildenafil and tadalafil are different active ingredients, even though both are PDE5 inhibitors and both have U.S. prescription products for erectile dysfunction. They differ in product families, available strengths, labeling and duration information. The comparison page sildenafil vs tadalafil explains those differences without treating either medicine as automatically better for an individual patient.
