Fenbendazole Veterinary Medication Guide
Fenbendazole is a veterinary antiparasitic active ingredient used in approved animal-drug products for several species. Product form, species and regulatory status vary, so a canine dewormer should not be confused with livestock or prescription veterinary formulations.
Fenbendazole as a Veterinary Antiparasitic
FDA’s animal-drug database lists multiple approved fenbendazole products. For dogs, current products include Panacur C and Safe-Guard Canine granules. FDA labeling describes these products as dewormers for specified intestinal parasites.
Dog Products: OTC and Prescription Context
Panacur C and Safe-Guard Canine granules are FDA-approved over-the-counter animal drugs for dogs. The current canine products contain fenbendazole granules at 22.2% (222 mg/g). A separate Panacur granules product is prescription-only and is labeled for dogs and certain other carnivorous/omnivorous animals.
This difference shows why the active ingredient alone does not determine OTC or prescription status. The exact animal product and label do.
Other Species and Dosage Forms
Fenbendazole also appears in approved products for cattle, goats and other species, including oral suspensions and medicated-feed products. In January 2026 FDA approved Defendazole, a generic fenbendazole oral suspension for beef and dairy cattle and goats.
A product labeled for livestock should not be treated as a canine product merely because it contains fenbendazole.
Product Status and Identification
Before purchasing or asking about a veterinary fenbendazole product, identify the species, trade name, concentration, dosage form, manufacturer and FDA application or current label. For prescription products, include the veterinarian’s prescription information.
No Human Cancer or Repurposing Claims
This page is strictly a veterinary medication reference. It does not present fenbendazole as a human cancer treatment, does not provide human dosing and does not recommend veterinary products for human use.
FDA has also warned veterinarians about adverse events reported with prolonged extra-label fenbendazole use in dogs. That reinforces the importance of distinguishing labeled veterinary use from unsupported repurposing.
Availability
Availability varies by species, product and supplier. A current product should be matched to its exact veterinary label rather than a generic “fenbendazole pills” listing. This page does not claim Paulsen’s Pharmacy currently stocks a veterinary fenbendazole product.
