Smoking Cessation Medication Support

Smoking-cessation medicines are available in several forms, including nicotine-replacement products and prescription tablets. A useful pharmacy conversation focuses on the exact product, whether it requires a prescription, how it fits the quit plan and whether there are practical access or refill questions.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine replacement therapy includes patches, gum and lozenges as well as prescription nicotine inhaler and nasal-spray products. Some NRT products are available over the counter, while others require a prescription.

Product form matters. A patch, gum, lozenge and inhaler are not interchangeable package types even though they all deliver nicotine. Compare the active ingredient, strength, form and label before purchasing or refilling.

Varenicline

Varenicline is a prescription smoking-cessation medicine. Brand and generic availability can change over time, so a current access question should use the exact prescription and current pharmacy product rather than an old brand-only article.

Bupropion SR

Bupropion SR is another prescription option used for smoking cessation. CDC includes bupropion SR among the FDA-approved medicines for adults who smoke cigarettes. It does not contain nicotine.

Bupropion is also used in other prescription contexts, so the product and treatment purpose should be clear on the prescription rather than inferred from the ingredient name alone.

Prescription vs OTC Access

CDC lists seven FDA-approved quit-smoking medicine options: five nicotine-replacement forms plus varenicline and bupropion SR. Whether a product is OTC or prescription-only depends on the form. These products therefore should not be grouped under a single access category.

Product and Availability Questions

Before contacting the pharmacy, note the product name, form and strength. For prescription products, include refill information. Availability may vary by manufacturer and package; this page does not promise current stock.

Pharmacy Support

A pharmacist can help identify OTC nicotine-replacement products, explain label information and clarify prescription-product questions. For brand/generic reference information, see Medication Information. For medication and refill support, visit Medication Services.

This page focuses on currently recognized smoking-cessation medication categories rather than presenting e-cigarettes as a medication substitute.
